Xenon was another midtown Manhattan club like Studio 54, but it never had the press or reputation of 54. Still, it attracted quite a crowd especially on weekends. By midnight the place was packed and in full swing. It was in an old theatre (like Studio 54) so it had structure on the ceiling that would lower different scenery during the night. Although it is quite common to have a smoke machine at a dance club now, back in the ’70s it was a novelty and fun to find yourself dancing in a cloud of smoke while the beat of the music and lights helped create a dizzying, intoxicating atmosphere.
